Barring People from Campus

Policy Summary

The university reserves the right to bar from university property or facilities any non-university affiliated person to whom the university does not wish to allow access.  Further, any person, whether affiliated with the university or not, who is determined to be violating applicable laws or university policies, procedures or practices, may be barred from university property or facilities as a consequence of his or her actions.  

The purpose of this policy is to maintain a safe and secure environment in which to conduct educational and research activities.

Policy

Property owned, controlled or leased by the university is private property, and the university reserves the right to determine who can and cannot access and/or use university facilities or be present on university property.  The university reserves the right to bar from university property or facilities any non-university affiliated person to whom the university does not wish to allow access.   

Further, if any person, whether affiliated with the university or not, violates or is violating university policy, procedure or practice, or any applicable laws or regulations, an officer of the GW Police Department (GWPD) has the discretion to ask the person to leave the area, and based on his/her observations and/or investigations, has the authority to bar the individual from returning to any property owned, controlled or leased by the university.  These notices are valid until revoked by the Chief of Police, and remain in force for a five year period.  Barring notices may be mailed, and do not require contact with a GWPD Officer. 

If an individual is barred from university property or from using university facilities, and he/she wishes to request that the bar notice be rescinded, he/she must direct his/her request to the Chief of Police, in writing. The letter must include an explanation of what occurred from the perspective of the individual who was barred and the reason(s) the individual believes the bar notice should be rescinded.  Students who have been suspended or expelled from the university and who are requesting that a bar notice be rescinded must submit their written request to the Office of the Vice President and Dean of Students who will review the request and forward it to the Chief of Police. 

The Chief of Police will respond to all requests in writing, either upholding the bar notice (with or without modifications) or rescinding the bar notice (with or without conditions).

If the violation poses an immediate threat or danger to persons or property or there is a medical emergency, contact:

If the violation does not pose an imminent threat or danger to persons or property, contact:

3. For non-emergencies at the Virginia Campus call the security officer at 703-726-3511, who acts as the liaison with the GW Police Department, or contact the Operations Manager at 703-726-3510
