Examples of GW Community Members

According to the University Policy Principles, university-level policies have broad application throughout the university, and they do not impact one singular unit but rather apply broadly to members of the university community such as faculty, staff, or students. A description of each population group is provided below:

Affiliates

A person or entity that, with a legitimate interest, is or seeks to be connected or associated with the university in any way that is not better attributed in another population of the GW Community. Examples of affiliates include but are not limited to contractors, vendors, interns, volunteers, and visiting scholars

Faculty

All faculty referenced in the Faculty Code.

Librarians

Under the Code for Librarians, the term “Librarians” includes both those with degrees from an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited programs, and those with other credentials deemed by a majority of voting members of the Council of Librarians to be sufficiently similar in scope to an ALA-accredited degree and/or relevant to the proposed position.

Visitors

Any person not directly associated with the university but has come in contact with the university, including anyone who frequents any university-owned, controlled, or leased property.

Postdocs

Postdoctoral associates and postdoctoral scholars (collectively referred to as postdocs) are individuals who have received a doctoral degree (or equivalent) and design, organize, and conduct specialized and advanced experiments using established scientific protocols, troubleshoot and design new protocols, summarize findings, and publish results in research journals, under the general supervision of a faculty member for a temporary and defined period of mentored advanced training to enhance the professional skills and research independence needed to pursue their chosen career path.)

Staff

All full-time, part-time, benefits-eligible, non-benefits eligible, temporary, and permanent non-faculty employees of the university.

Student Employees

An active Student, who occupies a part-time role that is a Federal Works Study (FWS) position in an on-campus unit, a non-FWS position in an on-campus unit, or a pre-approved off-campus organization, in which the student earns an hourly wage. Individuals may not hold a student employment position while they are hired into a full or part-time benefited staff position, or non-student temporary staff position, and may be fully or partially limited in holding a student employment position while being hired into a GA or GRA position.

Students

Any person currently enrolled whether full-time, part-time, or visiting, on a leave of absence or continuous enrollment, pursuing undergraduate, graduate or professional studies, whether or not in pursuit of a degree or of any form of certificate of completion. An individual new to the university is a student on the first day of classes or when participating in any official university activity, whichever occurs first. “Official university activity” can include residence in university residential facilities.

If a university policy were to broadly apply to all or a majority of these constituency groups, text such as "this policy applies to all university faculty, staff, and students and other individuals and entities including, but not limited to affiliates and visitors (collectively, 'GW Community Members')," could be included rather than individually listing the various applicable groups.
